I wrote about a graphic that stopped me cold at one line: Aksum adopted Christianity roughly forty to fifty years before Rome did. On the page, that gap is a sentence. On screen, itโs two dates sitting side by side, and watching them sit there does something a sentence canโt. This is the video companion to The Erasure Machine Runs on Dates Nobody Checks, eight civilizations, four books of scripture, and a map most people have never actually looked at.
A quick note, since this is new. Most of what comes through here has been words on a page, or a voice you could carry with you while you did something else. This is different, and it will be different again for a few pieces going forward. Some arguments live in language. Some live in a picture, a distance, a gap you have to watch to actually understand. When a piece needs to be seen rather than heard, it will come as an explainer like this one, full attention, not background noise. You will know it by the format, not just the label.
Video is not a convenience here. It is a formation decision, made differently than an audio companion. You have to watch the dates stack up, watch the map fill in one civilization at a time, to feel how much active work it takes to keep all of this out of a room.
Give it the full runtime. Not something for the background while you do something else, the kind of attention youโd give if someone handed you the map and said look closer.
